what to wear
Clothing choices can make a big difference in how your images look. The right outfits:
Help draw attention to faces and connections, rather than distracting patterns
Keep the focus on emotion, relationships, and expressions
Help create a cohesive, timeless feel
Reduce stress on session day (less outfit angst!)
This guide is here to help you choose comfortable, flattering, and camera-friendly outfits for newborn, sibling, parent, and family images.
Why it matters
General Tips & Principles
Coordinate, don’t match. Choose a palette (3–5 colours) that harmonise rather than everyone wearing identical colours.
Go soft & neutral. Earth tones, creams, beiges, soft greys, muted pastels, dusty greens, soft blues tend to photograph beautifully and stand the test of time.
Avoid bold logos, large patterns or graphics. They distract the eye away from faces and interaction.
Texture is your friend. Knitwear, lace, linen, soft cable knits, subtle ruching etc. add interest without overwhelming.
Layering helps. A cardigan, shawl, vest or scarf gives flexibility (add or remove) without switching full outfits.
Plan for comfort. Especially for babies and parents — clothes that are easy to move in, soft fabrics, minimal fuss.
Think about contrast & depth. If your backgrounds are light, wearing something slightly deeper in tone gives dimension.
Prepare for changes. Pack extra layers, blankets, spare outfits (especially for babies or toddlers).
Shoes and accessories: Keep them simple. Bare feet, socks, simple shoes work well. Minimal jewellery, subtle pieces.
Newborn Session: What to Wear
Baby (newborn)
Ideally nude / wrapped in a soft wrap / blanket.
If using a onesie or outfit, choose soft neutral tones, minimal embellishment.
Swaddles in natural fabrics (muslin, cotton, linen) in muted tones.
Headbands or hats are fine if simple and not overpowering.
Siblings (if included)
Go for soft neutrals or pastels, avoid bright primary colours or bold prints.
Simple dresses, knitwear, pants + tops.
Layering (cardigans, vests) is good.
Avoid “theme matching” (e.g. no superhero T-shirts).
Parents / Adults
Stick to your defined colour palette.
Consider wearing a textured top or soft knit — avoids glare or shine like satin or sequins.
For women: flowy dresses, soft knits, simple tops.
For men: button-ups, chambray, soft chinos or dark jeans, lightweight knits.
If including layers (cardigan, scarf, jacket), bring options.
Avoid fluorescent or overly bright colours.
Parent + Baby together
Keep both sides of the “duo” in compatible tones.
If one wears lighter tone, the other can wear a deeper shade in the same palette.
Use textures (lace, knits) to add visual interest without contrast overload.
Family Session: What to Wear
When capturing the whole family, including adults, children, and possibly a newborn:
Choosing a Palette
Stay within one colour family rather than mixing multiple bold colours.
Pick soft pastels (e.g. blush, soft blue, sage) or a neutral theme (e.g. creams, beiges, soft greys).
Vary light and dark shades within that single tone for interest, but avoid introducing strong contrasting colours.
Aim for an overall calm and cohesive look that keeps the focus on faces and connections.
Styling Tips for Families
Start with the individual pieces you like, then assemble as a group — lay them out together to see harmony.
Avoid everyone wearing white — pure white can “blow out” in bright light.
If one person wants colour, let them be “the pop” but others remain soft and grounded.
Use layering and accessories (shawls, scarves, cardigans) to adjust on the day.
Practical Reminders for Clients
Try on in advance. Stand in natural light and check in mirror whether colours flatter you, whether anything is too tight or uncomfortable.
Steam or iron. Wrinkles show in high resolution images.
Bring an outfit change. For babies and toddlers especially, accidents happen.
Bring simple props or heirlooms. A meaningful blanket, soft toy, family heirloom, but keep them minimal.
Be relaxed. The better you feel in your outfits, the more natural your expressions will be.
Timing & comfort. Don’t dress babies in multiple layers if the studio is warm. Use layers that are easy to remove.
